Tour notes for Moscow

Thoughts on Moscow

Crowded.

Infrastructure – good from afar but far from good.

The pavements are in poor condition.

Roads potholed.

Drivers are maniacs.

Not cheap.

Have main meal of the day at lunchtime as it’s much cheaper than dining out in the evening.

Use the metro for journeys of any distance.

Have transfers arranged on arrival and departure.

Buy a decent map before going; one that shows the street names in both Cyrillic and Roman script.

Get a good guidebook and do lots of research before departure.

Ladies dress to impress; 2” heels minimum, mostly 4”.

Good looking young ladies sit in coffee shops for hours learning to speak, read and write English.  Obviously the way to a better life.

Get to the Kremlin booking office as soon as it opens and buy tickets for the Armoury and Diamond museums as well as the general ticket.  Then go straight to the Armoury entrance and join the queue.

Presidential Guard parades at 1200 hours every Saturday – get to Sobornaya Pl 10 minutes earlier in order to get a good view.

Good eating establishments on the top floor of GUM.

Plenty of fast food joints in the basement of Okhotry Ryad.

McDonalds & KFC’s everywhere plus lots of Sushi and Italian eating places.

Take a Metro tour.

Wander.

Have lots of 100 rouble notes, a few 500 and a couple of 1000.

Use ATM’s in western hotels to get cash against a debit card as these have an English button.

Everyone has the latest gadgets.

People walk and drive everywhere with a mobile phone at their ear.

Designer carrier bags.

T shirts with western logos or even better English language.
